Bigbury & Burgh Island
A tidal island & glamorous hotel
At the village of Bigbury-on-Sea houses and villas line hills slanting down to a sandy beach that becomes extensive at low tide.
Discovery Surf School holds lessons and hires out kayaks and paddleboards.
Just off shore sits 20-acre Burgh Island – dominated by the magnificent art deco Burgh Island Hotel. Built in 1929, past guests include Josephine Baker, Winston Churchill and Agatha Christie.
The mystery writer used the island as inspiration for the novel And Then There Were None.
Burgh Island
Burgh Island is cut off from the mainland at high tide – then you’ll need to ride a vintage sea tractor (£2 each way). This precarious-looking vehicle sees you sitting high above the waves.
A 20 minute walking trail leads round Burgh Island to the remains of a Huers Hut (a look out post for pilchard shoals) at the top. The 14th century Pilchard Inn is an atmospheric place to eat.
