Jubilee Pool

Geothermally heated Art Deco lido

20180628 37 Jubilee Pool, Penzance

Built in the 1930s, Penzance’s Jubilee Pool has undergone an ultra-modern change – a £1.8 million pound project to heat part of it with geothermal energy. It brings a blissful element to this beautiful shore-side dip.

The scheme involved engineers drilling 410m down to a geothermal well. Naturally-warmed water is extracted and the heat is used to bring the pool up to a toasty 30–35 degrees. It’s a hugely popular swim – geothermal tickets sell out months in advance so book early.

Jubilee Pool

The rest of the seawater lido is no less delightful, although it is much cooler – the main pool is only 1–2 degrees warmer than the sea. Edged by elegant, pastel-blue steps and bright white colonnades, its curving triangular lines stretch out 100m into the ocean.
