Nice but rarely essential
Unlike in the US, not everyone in the UK tips routinely. The accepted amount if you do, is around 10–15% of the bill. Brits tend to tip only if the service or food was good.
It’s worth checking a “discretionary” service charge hasn’t been added to your bill. If it has there’s no need to add more. If you weren’t happy with the service, you can ask for the charge to be removed – although in reality that happens rarely.
Many chose to leave tips as cash – that way they can be sure the staff get it, rather than the cafe or restaurant itself.
