Château de Montfort

Simon's Castle?

The Château de Montfort dominates the small village of the same name and is close to the meander of the Dordogne river in the Black Périgord known as the Cingle de Montfort.

Perhaps the name is a little misleading as while the medieval warlord Simon de Montfort captured the castle in 1214 he immediately proceeded to pull it down. It was reconstructed only to be razed and rebuilt several times during the Hundred Years’ War.

The latest rebuild was by the french king Henri IV at the turn of the 17th Century although it was lovingly restored during the 19th Century as were many french castles, not always entirely accurately.

Note: Montfort Château is privately owned and not open to the public. The best views are from the D703 road.
