Belvès
The plus beau village of Belvès
One of France’s Plus Beaux Villages, or most beautiful villages, Belvès stands on a limestone bluff, south of the Dordogne River and overlooking the Nauze Valley in the Black Périgord.
Viewed from the southwest in the afternoon it is easy to see why it has gained this honour and a walk round the village (details from the Tourist Office, 1 rue des Filhots) will confirm this. In particular the place d’ Armes boasts an 11th century bell tower and a 15th century covered market hall (halle) both well worth seeing.
Don’t miss the Troglodyte dwellings under the place d’Armes where several families lived during the Middle Ages.
