St-Cirq-Lapopie
A Plus Beau Village on a cliff
St-Cirq-Lapopie (pronounced St-Seer) is perched high up on a rocky bluff above the south bank of River Lot 21miles /34km east of Cahors in the Lot département . This is a remarkable site and it isn't really surprising that this is one of the Plus Beaux Villages. See the You Tube Video!
It takes its name from the martyr St Cyr whose relics were brought here by St Amadour in the dim and distant past. The La Popies were owners of the castle here during the middle ages and gave the village the second part of its name. Crowned by the ruins of their castle, the village is surveyed by a fortified church surrounded by brown tiled houses and narrow lanes.
TIP: While St-Cirq is an absolutely fascinating place to wander around it can get extremely busy when the tour buses arrive especially during July and August. Try to visit early morning or late afternoon when the place is relatively quiet.
