The Dordogne region has been inhabited since the Middle Paleolithic Age about 150,000 years ago.

There is abundant evidence of people living here during the so-called Solutrean (21,000 years ago) and Magdalenian (17,000 years ago) Cultures - skeletons of early humans have been found along with early flint tools and cave paintings.

The best places to see all these are at Les Eyzies and Lascaux.
