Mid-range: Hotels & B&Bs

Fraoch House

Aside from a small number of modern chain hotels in the city centre, Edinburgh's standard form of mid-range accommodation is the Bed and Breakfast.

These usually constitute around half-a-dozen rooms in the host's house (guesthouses are very similar, usually just a few rooms bigger) and are typically at least a 10-minute walk from the city centre.

All these have an equivalent status to North-American motels (whereas North American Bed Breakfasts tend to be higher-end boutique affairs), though they're far less anonymous.

Breakfast

Breakfast almost always means a full cooked breakfast, if you want it, as well as cereals and toast, all of which should set you up for the best part of the day!

Homestays

If you're drawing a blank, or don't want breakfast included then consider a homestay via a site like AirBnB, which has plenty of choices in Edinburgh – including smart and self-contained options that are best for small groups.
