Neitsitorn
Defensive tower with famous café
On the south side of Toompea, a sloping park abuts another impressive stretch of town wall. Among the towers here is a gruff, grey blockhouse that once served as a prison for prostitutes – ironically named the Neitsitorn (“Virgins’ Tower”); it’s now home to one of the few café-bars popular in Soviet-era Tallinn that is still going strong today.
The café is up on the top floor; an exhibition of café culture occupies the lower stories. The wall-to-ceiling windows set into the tower’s east-facing side offer excellent views of the Old Town.
