Tartu Art Museum
Estonia’s best artists on show
At the eastern end of the Town Hall Square, the house at no. 18 leans crookedly owing to a shifting of the water table. It was originally the pied-à-terre of Mikhail Barclay de Tolly (1761–1818), a Livonian baron of Scottish descent and one of Tsar Alexander I’s top generals during the Napoleonic Wars.
The house now holds the Tartu Art Museum (Tartu kunstimuuseum), a vast and engrossing collection embracing works by just about any Estonian ever to pick up a paintbrush. Artists associated with the Pallas Art School (active 1919–40) are prominently featured – the expressionist landscapes of Konrad Mägi (1878–1925), dense pencil drawings of Eduard Wiiralt (1898–1954), and surreal visions of Karin Luts (1904–93) are well worth looking out for.
