Bonifacio
Viewed from the water Bonifacio has to be one of the most stunning seaside cities in the whole of the Mediterranean. From the Straits of Bonifacio on the south side, the cliff it stands atop facing Sardinia only 12km away, seems virtually impregnable and from the North approaching along the inlet of the Goulet de Bonifacio
the towering Genoese Citadel above the harbour appears impregnable.
Where to Start?
If you’ve driven here it’s probably best to leave your vehicle in the Basse-Ville - there are two car parks at the top of the Port. Walk up the steps into the old Town passing through an ancient gateway into a maze of Medieval streets enclosed by the Citadel.
Napoleon stayed here so look out for the house where he lived on Rue des Empereurs for a couple of months.
