Grenoble
Capital of the French Alpes
Grenoble is located at the confluence of the Isère and Drac rivers and surrounded by the mountains of the Vercors to the south, the Chartreuse to north, the Dauphine Alps to the east.
A thriving modern city with spacious boulevards, Grenoble began as a Roman Town although during the Middle Ages its development was constrained due to regular flooding. Nevertheless it occupied an important stopping point on the main road from the Rhône Valley to Turin. Grenoble’s centre is still near to where the old Roman City was situated adjacent to the 17th century Place Granette
