Le Puy-en-Velay
Green Lentil City
A Statue made from Cannons
Le Puy is known for the quality of the green lentils grown around the City and also as a gateway to the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage trail.
However, this ancient City is blessed with one the most stunning locations in the whole Region with its landmark red statue of the Virgin Mary made by melting down about 200 captured cannons used at Sebastopol during the Crimean War. These were then cast into the statue which was placed on top of a high column of Volcanic Rock known as the Rocher Corneille opposite the Rocher St-Michel-d’Aiguille about 300m/1000ft away.
