Dole
Former Capital of the Compté
Dole is a charming old town with lots to see in a relatively small area in the old streets around the Collégiale Nôtre-Dame. The former capital of the Franche-Compté until 1422 when that title was passed to Besançon, it did not become part of France till 1674.
The best place to view the old town from is the Port on the Rhône au Rhin Canal (see image below). Walk back across the Rue du Prélo
and into the old town itself which is a fascinating maze of old streets including the birthplace of Louis Pasteur.
On your way into the town don’t miss the Canal and Moulin des Tanneurs, celebrating one of Dole’s former industries, just behind the Rhône au Rhin Canal.
