The Morvan and Autun
The Heart of Burgundy
The Morvan is a large Regional Nature Park covering more than 280,000 hectares of woodland to explore, lakes for fishing including Settons, Saint-Agnan and Chamboux as well as plentiful farmland stretching into all four of Burgundy’s departments, although much of it is in Nievre. The highest point in Burgundy, at 901m/2956ft, is the summit of the granite massif of the Morvan Rangeknown as Haut Folin in the Saone et Loire.
There are several small villages and hamlets scattered about the Morvan but don’t miss the Gallic Oppidum of Bibracte near Autun on the slopes of Mt Beuvray at St-Leger-sous-Beuvray, where there is a museum recalling Celtic civilisation. Bibracte was the home of the Aedui tribe who were allies of the Romans and were eventually moved to Autun by them. Also worth seeing are the Gouloux Waterfall and the Narvau Gorges a little further to the north.
