Tours
Gateway to the Chateau of the Loire
The original settlement here known as Turons became part of the Roman Empire and called Caesarodunum (Caesar’s Hill) which became quite large. Following their withdrawal back to Rome it shrunk to a small area on the left bank of the Loire where the old Roman Arena provided some protection from invaders.
By 375 AD the town had taken on its original name, now Turones and it became capital of the so-called third Lyonnaise. It gradually became an important religious centre where St Martin was the Bishop and a centre for trade and government even becoming the capital of France during the reign of Louis XI (1461-83).
Place Plumereau
Nowadays Tours is a bustling university city and tourist centre for the Loire Valley Châteaux. There is plenty to see here so be sure to allow a couple of days especially if you want to include a couple of the Châteaux too!
