Les-Sables-d’Olonne
The home of Vendée Globe
Les Sables-d’Olonne is a large seaside town on the Atlantic Ocean and a sub-prefecture of the Vendée, located just north of La Rochelle and south of the resorts St-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and St-Jean-de-Monts.
The settlement was founded in 1218 by Savary de Mauléon from nearby Talmondais prospering well into the 17th C. from fishing and still sends more than 80 boats a year into the Atlantic cod fishing.
On the Côte de Lumière, this popular resort has much to offer the visitor: a vibrant promenade with attractive shopping and cafés, a long, fine, safe and sandy beach, an extensive marina not to mention a casino and a thalassotherapy spa!
However, the resort’s main claim to fame is that every four years it hosts the setting off of the Vendée Globe, the renowned single-handed, non-stop, un-aided, round the world yacht race.
