Nan Lian Garden
Traditional Chinese landscape garden (l,d; $)
Nan Lian Garden is Hong Kong’s most beautiful Chinese garden, at least to my eyes. Built in the classical style of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), it adheres to the blueprint of China’s Jiangshouju, the only Tang landscape garden that can still be traced through chronicles.
With an emphasis on water and natural scenery, Nan Lian Garden is meant to be toured in a one-way circular route, so that each turn of the path brings different vistas of artificial hills, ornamental rocks, ponds, waterfalls, and wooden structures (unfortunately, surrounding densely packed housing estates mar some of the views).
