Yuen Po Street Bird Garden
Where caged birds sing
Songbirds are prized pets in Chinese households, so if you look closely you might see a bird cage hanging from an apartment balcony or perhaps even see someone sitting in a park with his caged bird to give it some quality outdoor time.
But nowhere will you see as many birds than at Yuen Po Street Bird Garden. An attractive venue, with Chinese-style moon gates and lanes lined with some 70 vendors selling songbirds, intricate bird cages, live crickets, mealy worms, and tiny porcelain bowls, it’s a popular hangout for men who bring their pet birds for an outing, especially in the morning.
If you come with children, make sure they avoid direct contact (hand sanitizers are prevalent). And incidentally, you can’t miss the colorful Flower Market Road next door, with prices so cheap you’ll be tempted to buy some for your hotel room.
