Cafe Matchbox
Back to the '50s, Hong Kong Style (b,l,d; $)
You might not want to come to Cafe Matchbox for the food–Hong Kong’s version of comfort food circa 1950s–but this recreated old-fashioned cafe tugs at the heartstrings of Hongkongers who remember when cafes like this dotted the former colony.
Decorated with retro decor (like its plastic hanging lamps and tiled walls) and with oldie goldies like Chubby Checker doing the twist or Hong Kong movie classics on the TV, it offers a wild mix of food, including spaghetti dishes, Japanese noodles, hot dogs, sandwiches, spring chicken, grilled pork chop and buttered toast with omelet or fried egg.
Then again, you might just find yourself craving its signature pancakes, topped with sliced bananas, walnuts, caramel sauce, and ice cream, or its freshly baked egg tarts. The drink of choice is the old standby, milk tea. There’s an English menu with some photos, but the website is only in Chinese.
