Hong Kong International Airport
World's 7th-busiest international passenger airport
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) opened in 1998, replacing aging Kai Tak Airport in Kowloon where landings in one of the most densely populated cities in the world elicited excitement (if not fear).
Located just off Lantau on an enlarged island about 20 miles/32km from central Hong Kong, HKIA is state-of-the-art, with numerous facilities that include a Hong Kong Tourism Board Visitor Information Centre, a Hong Kong Hotel Association counter where you can book rooms in more than 100 member hotels, money exchange counters (rates are not good, so exchange only US$50 or less), and the obligatory shops and restaurants. Unusual, however, is the world’s first airport IMAX theater and even simulated golf games. There’s also free Wi-Fi throughout the airport and even computer stations offering free Internet access.
