Nappanee
Barns, buggies, candies & a trip to the past
More than three decades ago, LaVern Pletcher, a second-generation Nappanee furniture storeowner, had a chance to achieve his dream.
Amish Acres
Pletcher, who had traveler to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for inspiration, had always harbored an idea of preserving an Amish farm and making it available to visitors. So, when the 80-acre Manasses Kuhns farm was up for sale by public auction in October of 1968, Pletcher put in his bid. He names it Amish Acres and for decades it was the place to experience great Amish cooking, live theater and a glimpse of rural life. It is the only Old Order Amish farm listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Now The Inns at Nappanee, all that charm remains with a few differences as well. Still a great destination, it's a must when visiting this lovely town with a thriving downtown and plenty to do.
