The Barns of Nappanee
A Northern Indiana Amish experience
A popular destination for years, Amish Acres is now The Barns at Nappanee. But Amish Acres aficionados shouldn't worry. There will be more not less of what they loved.
But let's begin at the start with the restoration of the Stahly-Nissley-Kuhns farmstead, the only Amish farm listed in The National Register of Historic Places. The story behind this wonderful example of Amish living goes back to when widow Barbara Stahly and her five sons migrated from Germany to the southwest corner of Elkhart County, in 1839, making them, according to University of Chicago historian James Landing, likely the first Amish settlers in Indiana.
Now visitors can enjoy such attractions as a guided tour of the Stahly-Nissley/Kuhns farmstead which showcases the original main houses, the Schweitzer bank barn, and out buildings. The tour includes a horse/tractor drawn wagon ride around the farm’s pond where historical buildings have been preserved and moved to Amish Acres from neighboring farms.
