Hilltop Inn, Evansville

Brain food (l,d; $)

Here's what they look like

Brain sandwiches are so popular in Evansville that there are at least three restaurants that serve them regularly, one of which, the www.facebook.com/HilltopInnEVV/, goes through about 150 pounds in a week.

The Hilltop Inn, which was a stage coach stop in the late 1830s, has been making the sandwiches for the more than 170 plus years. The West Side Nut Club Fall Festival, the second largest street festival in the U.S., held the first full week in October in Evansville. The fests biggest draw are the vendors selling fried brain sandwiches, that Southern Indiana specialty that leaves others in the state shaking their heads. But people line up for over an hour to get one or more of those sandwiches.

Even one of the hospitals in Evansville serves brain sandwiches one day a week in their cafeteria.

The restaurants down there closely guard brain sandwich recipes as it's very competitive.
