Owen County
Definitely off the beaten track, Owen County is a delight for those who love to go wandering. Mostly pastoral, a good starting place is Cataract Bridge, a covered bridge built the late 1800s and spanning Cataract Falls, the largest waterfall in Indiana.
The upper falls has a sheer plunge of 20 feet; the lower falls, about a half a mile downstream, falls another 18 feet. Nearby, the Cataract General Store has been in continuous operation as a store since 1860, making it one of the oldest general stores in the state. It's an old fashioned place, just like a general store would have been like more than 160 years ago, selling moon pies, pickled products, some basic foodstuff, clothing and cast iron cookware.
The falls here are tagged "Indiana's Niagara Falls" and while that may be an exaggeration but it's still beautiful.
And for those who love a good ghost story, there's one to tell about Cataract Bridge.
