Pokagon State Park
Four Season Fun
Want to find out what the 20 to 30 second ride down the toboggan run at Pokagon State Park is like in the winter going down the one quarter mile slide, the only one in Indiana? Visit www.tobogganrun.com for a video of the trip from top to bottom. Along the way, the park, in a playful mood, set up a radar gun which clocks the speeds (like the signs you often see on the roadways that tell you how fast you are going). The fastest speed so far? 42 miles per hour.
About 90,000 people a year do the run and park officials recommend coming on a Friday or Saturday night if possible (the run is only open on the weekends) because that's when it's least crowded. And show up before the end of February as the toboggan season ends then.
There are other things to do at the park during the winter as well. There's a large fire ring near the run and Wooley says people often bring pots of chili and soup and hang them over the fire to heat. Marshmallows are welcome too.
