Rishiri Island 利尻島
Ferry to remote hiking (for adventurers!)
Rishiri, off the northern tip of Hokkaidō, is for off-the-beaten-track adventurers.
Most come to climb Rishiri-zan, the gorgeous 1719m dormant volcano that gives the island both its shape and name.
Part of the fun here is getting to Wakkanai at the northern tip of Hokkaidō and catching the Heartland Ferry out to the island. There’s a small port at Oshidomari, fishing villages, plus the opportunity to ride a bicycle around the island.
If you’ve come this far, consider going the whole hog and also visiting Rebun Island.
