Karuizawa 軽井沢
Popular retreat for Tōkyōites
Promoted as a mountain resort by Western residents of Japan from the late 1800s, this upmarket, historical town can be accessed in just over an hour from Tōkyō using the Hokuriku Shinkansen high-speed railway.
The old part of town known as Kyu-Karuizawa features galleries, boutiques, shops, cafes and chic restaurants, especially in Karuizawa Ginza, named after Tōkyō's famous upmarket shopping district.
Surprisingly, next to the station is the massive Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza, an outlet mall for popular brands, outdoor goods, sports wear and trendy items.
Karuizawa has been seen as an auspicious place to find a suitable life partner after former Emperor Akihito met Michiko, his ‘commoner bride’, here on a tennis court in 1957.
