Tottori Sand Dunes 鳥取砂丘
Japan’s biggest dunes & only ‘desert’
Known in Japanese as Tottori Sakyu, these sand dunes are popular with Japanese visitors, many of whom think of them as Japan’s only desert and are keen for a camel ride (which is duly available).
Spanning 16km of coastline along of the Sea of Japan, the dunes, which are up to 2km wide and 50m high, are part of the Sanin Kaigan National Park.
It’s all on with a Visitor Centre, Sand Museum, chairlift, the camel rides, paragliding and dune surfing.
Visit while staying in Tottori city - or the dunes can be visited in a day trip from Matsue.
