Kirishima 霧島
Myths, history & hiking
A truly impressive volcanic landscape, Kirishima is an important site in the creation mythology of Japan. It was here that the god Ninigi-no-Mikoto, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, is said to have descended from heaven to rule over the earth. He married a local princess, became mortal and established the lineage of Japanese Emperors.
Kirishima Shrine, devoted to Ninigi-no-Mikoto, sits to the south of the mountains.
High above are the Kirishima peaks, sacred Takachiho-no-mine, where Ninigi-no-Mikoto descended from heaven, smoking Shinmoe-dake, James Bond ‘You Only Live Twice’ filming location, and Karakuni-dake, Kirishima’s highest peak at 1700m. Hiking in the Kirishima Mountains is brilliant in fine weather.
