Pension ペンション

Small family-run places; mainly in resort areas

Skiing in Niseko, Pension Anne

A French word that has found its way into Japanese, pension are Western-style, family-run places, usually offering a personal touch.

They’re mainly found in mountain, lake and ski resorts or near popular beaches. The people running them are often ‘lifestylers’, into the local activities on offer, such as skiing or surfing and are good sources of local advice.

Expect to pay ¥6,000 to ¥12,000 per night per person, the more expensive places including dinner & breakfast, often with home-grown ingredients.

Most pension will have a dining room, while some will have shared toilets and bathrooms.

Bookings can easily be made on accommodation search engines.
