Shukubō 宿坊
Stay in a Buddhist temple
Some temples, especially in popular pilgrimage destinations, offer temple lodgings. Shukubō present an excellent chance to get a taste of the simple, traditional lifestyle of Buddhist monks.
There will generally be basic Japanese-style rooms, futon and shared toilets and bathroom, though some temples may also have more luxurious rooms.
Offering accommodation has become a big side business for some temples. Expect to pay between ¥9,000 and ¥15,000 per person per night, including dinner and breakfast, usually shōjin ryori (vegetarian monks' cuisine).
Visitors also have the opportunity to participate in evening and morning prayer sessions as part of the experience.
Book via accommodation search engines.
Kōya-san has over 50 temples operating shukubō, while a large number of the 88 Sacred Temples of Shikoku pilgrimage also have shukubō for pilgrims. They are all over Japan though - check out Shukubō Across Japan.
