Love Hotels ラブホテル
‘Stay’ overnight in a themed room
It’s estimated that there are 30,000 Love Hotels throughout Japan - hotels that specialise in renting out rooms for ‘rest’ (a euphimism for ‘play’) in a country known for its small apartments that literally have ‘paper walls’ and little privacy.
If you see a hotel with a neon sign outside that says ‘rest’ and ‘stay’ with rates, you’re looking at a love hotel - also euphemistically known as ‘boutique’ or ‘fashion’ hotels.
‘Rest’ means a short stay from 1–3 hours that may cost between ¥2,00-¥7,000, depending on the time of day, while an overnight stay can cost anywhere from ¥3,900 upwards.
The trick is that check-in time might not be until much later than that of a normal hotel, once ‘rest’ hours are over. It’s all about maximising occupancy and revenue.
Love Hotels have even taken to being bookable on some popular search engines. If you’re after a unique Japanese cultural experience, take a look at the photos, pick your room and make a booking.
