Garden design has long been an important art form in Japan.

Landscaped gardens have evolved with a variety of styles and elements, and outstanding gardens can be found across the country.

The Sanmeien are the recognised ‘3 Great Gardens’ of Japan - Kenrokuen in Kanazawa, Kōrakuen in Okayama and Kairakuen in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture. Ritsurin-kōen in Takamatsu on Shikoku must have come close.
