Plumb Blossom Viewing 梅

The first signs of spring (late-Feb–late-March)

Ume

The plum, originally introduced from China, is associated with the start of spring as plum blossoms are some of the first to bloom each year.

In most areas of Japan, including Tōkyō, they typically flower in February and March, before the more celebrated cherry blossoms that kick in from late March.

Plum blossoms are celebrated with plum festivals (ume matsuri) in public parks, shrines and temples across the country.
