Sanja Matsuri 三社祭
Popular Tōkyō festival (mid-May)
Held in the Asakusa district of Tōkyō, this major shrine festival usually attracts close to 2 million people over its 3 days. Expect around 100 portable shrines (mikoshi) in which Shintō deities (kami) are paraded about the streets to bring good fortune to local businesses and residents.
The focus of the festival, three large mikoshi of Asakusa Shrine, make their appearance on the Sunday. For the full 3 days, Asakusa is alive with drums and flutes, packed with food stalls, festival games and rowdy revelers.
