Nagasaki Kunchi 長崎くんち
Celebrate the city’s diversity (7-9 Oct)
This vibrant 400-year-old festival celebrates Nagasaki's diverse cultural history with dance, food and fun at Suwa Shrine.
It incorporates aspects of Chinese and Dutch cultures, which have played a role in the city's history. Nagasaki was the most important of the few ports open to foreign traders during Japan's period of isolation during the Edo period (1603-1868).
The festival's name is believed to come from ku-nichi ("9th day"), the 9th day of the 9th month of the lunar calendar.
