Yoshino 吉野
Cherry blossoms & pilgrims
Mt Yoshino cherry blossom viewing is a highlight of spring in Kansai and renowned Japan-wide, making Yoshino a ‘cherry blossom destination’. There are an astounding 30,000 cherry trees that visitors can view as they ascend the mountain.
Yoshino also has a long, rich history as a center of Shugendō mountain worship.
It is the base of the 170km pilgrimage trail to sacred Mt Omine and on via the Omine-Okugake Trail all the way to the three shrines of Kumano - taking 5-7 days.
Yoshino, along with the Kumano Kodō and Kōya-san, is world heritage-listed as part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.
