Sumo at Kokugikan

A special highlight for any visitor to Japan is to go to watch Sumō. Professional tournaments take place six times a year for 15 days each in January, May and September at Ryōgoku Kokugikan in Tōkyō, March in Osaka, July in Nagoya and December in Fukuoka.

Tōkyō’s Ryōgoku Kokugikan is considered the ‘home of sumō’. This massive 10,000 seat stadium is a one-minute walk from Ryōgoku Station on the JR Sōbu Line, or a five-minute walk from the Ōedo Line exits for the same station.

The Japan Sumō Association has an English-language website that provides details of upcoming bashō (tournaments) and information on how to purchase tickets.
