Qubbat Lalla Zohra
small saint's shrine - قبة للا زهرة
Just east of the Koutoubia, by the main road, a little whitewashed koubba (shrine with a dome) is the tomb of an eighteenth-century saint named Fatima Zohra.
One story is that Zohra was a West African slave who converted to Islam and became a preacher. Another is that her father was an important Sufi sheikh, and she followed in his footsteps. As a female saint, she's given the title lalla.
It’s popularly believed that at night Lalla Zohra would take the form of a dove and fly about performing miracles, and Marrakshi women still take their daughters to her tomb for beraka (sainly blessing).
The Qubbat Lalla Zohra is in fact just the most prominent of a little group of saints' tombs between the Koutoubia and Avenue Mohammed V, plus one just across the street.
