Place Ville Marie
Historic skyscraper & mall
One of Downtown’s defining buildings, the 47-storey Place Ville Marie was built in 1962 to become Montreal’s first real skyscraper.
Though there are taller ones now, the building still makes its mark on the city skyline - not least at night when its rooftop lasers strafe the night sky.
The building
The work of architect IM Pei, the skyscraper was built for the Royal Bank of Canada, which still calls the building home, though it's now more famous for the shopping mall on its lower floors which became the first significant cornerstone of Montreal’s Underground City.
The plaza
A little outdoor plaza beside Place Ville Marie, and bearing the same name, is good for a break or sandwich in good weather.
