Sweetgrass baskets
Cultural icon
These handwoven baskets lend a daily showcase of the African American cultural tradition. Other than these roadside stands stretching along U.S. 17 in Mt. Pleasant, these handcrafted wares are found only in the market in Charleston and a few shops or art shows in South Carolina.
The sweetgrass itself only grows in certain marshes along the South Carolina coast, and the artists who create the baskets usually number through several generations.
