Waitangi Day
New Zealand's national day (Feb 6)
Waitangi Day marks the anniversary of the initial signing – on 6 February 1840 – of the Treaty of Waitangi, regarded as the founding document of the nation.
A public holiday and a three-day weekend, celebrations around the country are somewhat muted, but in Waitangi in the Bay of Islands, there’s a lot going on – concerts and entertainment, market stalls, arts & crafts, food options, and often, protests of some form or other.
The Prime Minister is usually in attendance at the Treaty Grounds.
