Queenstown Winters
What’s an alpine resort without snow? Not very happy. Fortunately, Queenstown doesn’t have too many years like that. Plenty of the fluffy white stuff has usually shown up by late June, keeping snow sports junkies up the mountains each day through early October.
Town gets busy about 4.30-5pm each day as everyone returns to lodgings before heading out for a bit of the country’s top “apres ski”.
While Coronet Peak and The Remarkables are close at hand, plenty head further afield to Cardrona Alpine Resort (one hour) or Treble Cone Ski Area (1 1/2 hours), near Wanaka, for the day.
Queenstown Ice Arena, for ice skating, is in town in the Queenstown Gardens - and for a raucous experience, head to a home game of the Queenstown Sky City Stampede, the town’s ice hockey team that plays in the NZ league.
