Hokitika

hokitika 1

This bustling little seaside town of 3,000 has plenty going on. There’s a thriving arts and crafts community and downtown is peppered with gold-rush era buildings housing works by local artists.

There’s also a pounamu (greenstone) carving industry and you’ll be hard-pressed to get out of town with all your gold. Stonemats Hokitika, just north of town on the main highway, is a great example of an innovative local arts industry.

Lots of fun to be had here too, especially if you turn up for the legendary Hokitika Wildfoods Festival.

Inland, the Hokitika Gorge Walk has legions of fans.
