Picton

Gateway to the South Island

Picton

Positively pulsating with visitors in summer, Picton (pop4500) goes a bit off the boil out of tourist season, but still does a great job as the gateway to the South Island.

Ferries cruise up the sound, disgorge cars, campervans, trucks and passengers at the ferry port, then load up again and head back to Wellington.

The Coastal Pacific scenic train links Picton with Christchurch, but with limited departures. InterCity buses also head south through Blenheim and Kaikoura on the way to Christchurch.

Many head south without giving Picton a second glance, but the town makes a good place to stay and explore the Marlborough Sounds at leisure. There are lots of accommodation options from budget to luxurious and good restaurants and cafes.
