Considered one of the top day walks in the country, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a full-on one-way 19.4km hike that will take 6-9hrs. In fine weather, this is a gorgeous walk across a volcanic alpine landscape of dramatic contrasts – steaming vents, glacial valleys, old lava flows, alpine vegetation and colourful crater lakes – and you’ll rave about it for the rest of your life.

In poor weather though, it is an arduous slog and you may struggle to see your hand in front of your face, let alone the mighty views. Check weather forecasts accordingly. Weather is extremely changeable and hikers should be well-equipped and follow local advice.

This is a one-way hike - you’ll need to arrange shuttle transport. Do so at Visitor Centres in Taupo, Turangi and Whakapapa or online at Tongariro Crossing Shuttles or Tongariro Expeditions.
