Téte au Carrée
A square head in Nice
The Téte au Carrée is located in a small park just to the north west of place Garibaldi. This unusual structure, designed by Yves Bayard and Sacha Sosno, is the foremost example of contemporary art in Nice.
Bayard had planned to use Sosno’s idea of a square head as sculpture for some time. He got an opportunity in 1997 when the City Fathers chose their design for some new offices for their library near the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. The library itself, Bibliotheque Louis Nucera, is actually under the garden known as the Promenade des Arts. Enter via the place Yves Klein.
A Square Head?
Standing 30m (nearly 100ft) high and 14m (46ft) wide this cube shaped human head sculpture contains the seven storied offices of the Nice Municipal Library. The cube itself is 15m2 and has space for 40 members of staff.
Visitors cannot enter the cube but the library can be accessed by the public. The Promenade des Arts is open, however, and often displays some very colourful flower beds.
Département: Alpes-Maritimes.
