Villa Kérylos
Replica Classical Greek Villa on the Riviera
The South of France was one of the favourite spots of the Ancient Greeks when they were looking for trading posts, or emporions, around the Mediterranean to trade from – Nice (Nikai) and Marseille (Massalia) to name but two were both established during the Classical era.
Théodore Reinach, the celebrated archeologist, went a step further and created his own Greek Villa at the turn of the 20th Century! Together with the architect Emmanuel Pontremoli, he created a typical Greek Villa based on the design of 2nd century BC houses from the Island of Delos.
Using the concept of a peristyle, or square, around which twelve columns of Carrrara marble were arranged, the surrounding rooms were filled with replica furniture produced using traditional methods as well as period ornamentation. Following the same theme the garden could easily be in Greece, planted as it is with olives, vines, myrtle, cypresses, palms, carob and pomegranate trees.
The location on a small promontory near Beaulieu-sur-Mer is absolutely perfect with the blue Mediterranean lapping the shores on both sides of the villa giving the appearance of being in the Aegean Sea. A small harbour and views of St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on the West side completes the picture.
