Villa Grecque Kérylos

An ancient Greek villa reconstruction

Villa Kerylos, Beaulieu-Sur-Mer (33)

Not at all what you would expect to find here but then Cimiez, above nearby Nice, was originally the Greek trading outpost of Nikea so really it's quite appropriate!

The idyllic Villa Grecque Kérylos is reconstruction of a Greek villa from Antiquity and the brainchild of the archaeologist Théodore Reinbach.

Beaulieu-sur-Mer - Villa Kerylos

This accurate replica was built in 1902 by Reinbach and filled with Greek style furniture and decorated appropriately. However, he very sensibly insisted that the Villa had all the 20th comforts such as running water and underfloor heating although these are very well concealed! Reinbach bequeathed Kérylos to the Institute of France in 1928 and it was classified as a Historic Monument in 1966.

The Villa is surrounded by luxurious gardens filled with Mediteranean planting and located on part of the coast which reminded Reinbach of the Aegean and in particular the Cycladic island of Delos where he had spent several years.
